Magic Music Bus Tour 2017

Sometimes you get a hug that's so energized it can carry you. Last month I received such a hug.
One of the planned stops on the Magic Music Bus Tour was the Hendrix Music Academy in Renton, WA, a suburb of Seattle. This after-school music program is run by Tina Hendrix, the niece of Jimi Hendrix.
What Tina is doing here is a very beautiful thing. She has turned her family's large basement into a music studio for children in her area that come from challenging home situations. Some have been homeless or are on the cusp. If it wasn't for Tina and her instructors, these kids would not have the opportunity of music education. Not only does she feed their musical soul, she feeds their tummy. This place is a sanctuary for these kids. It's a very warm and inviting place with a high level of positive energy. It's smartly decorated with Jimi Hendrix photos, quotes, and hip art; including Tina's dad, Leon Hendrix. She gave me a Jimi tee designed by him that I will cherish.
Tina embodies the quote of her uncle, "when the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." She is love in action. Tina gives me hope that this world will know peace one day. If enough people act from their inner spirit and not react to negative ego then it can happen. Just believe it.

Several programs that Hungry for Music supports converged on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on June 3 to culminate a week-long instrument drive that supported several Cleveland programs including Campus International School, Salvation Army youth music program, The Music Settlement, and Girls Rock Camp.
Students from Campus International School kicked off the concert with a beautiful string orchestra set. Many of the students performed with instruments they had received last year from Hungry for Music. We donated over three dozen instruments to the school last year.
Intonation Music Workshop from Chicago had two of their all-star bands perform, T.I.OT.E. and COCOYOYO. They both presented stellar sets.
Philadelphia’s Rock to the Future House Band also turned in another rocking set
We are grateful to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame staff, especially Kathyrn Metz, for another successful year. We are already looking forward to the next one!

Tom Asher's Violins
Tom Asher, a violin shop owner, woodworker, and luthier, recently provided Hungry for Music with over 70 violins and cellos. Tom is nearing retirement and wanted to downsize his shop. What a blessing for programs that Hungry for Music supports! Most of his donations have been distributed along the road on the Magic Music Bus Tour. Programs that have benefited from Tom’s generosity are:

The rain held off and another successful Hungry for Crawfish took place at Ft. Hunt Park in Alexandria,VA on May 13.
Of Tomorrow opened with a jamming set and the Ron Holloway Band had the pavilion shaking with their high energy performance.
Massive quantities of crawfish, corn, potatoes, bread, and beverages were consumed and much fun was had.

Always look forward to this quaint music festival in the Hudson Valley. Hungry for Music will be holding a music instrument drive the month of August in the Hudson Valley culminating at the Summer Hoot, at 3-day music festival (August 25-27) at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridge, NY (20 minutes from Woodstock).
Once again we are sponsoring an instrument petting zoo, with our co-host Hudson Valley Musician Collective, during the festival. This has been a popular fixture at the last several Winter and Summer Hoots.

Hungry for Music have been donating string instruments to Austin Public Schools since 2009, in honor of violinist Amy Farris. Amy's best friend, music teacher Elizabeth Whitehead Chappell, identifies kids who she knows deserve to have their own violin or viola.

We have a growing number of instruments that, after being assessed by HFM repairmen and luthier’s, are deemed not repairable. These instruments are given to artists to transform into works of art.
We have done two previous art shows auctions (DC & NY) that raised funds to purchase new instruments. The next one will be at the Winter Hoot 2018.
